Tomatoes in Our Country

It is believed that the tomato entered Türkiye through Thrace and Adana in the final period of the Ottoman Empire. At first, as in other countries, it was considered sinful and was not eaten. Only after a religious ruling did its consumption and cultivation begin in the country.

Annual world tomato production is above 114 million tonnes. Türkiye ranks third among the countries of the world in tomato production, with an annual output of around 8 million tonnes. The tomato is also the most widely grown species in Turkish greenhouse farming.
